Celtic fans say board likes money but not the supporters

On The Football Show, a Celtic fan said the club has money but is not spending it, and that supporters want ambition, not multi-million outlay.

By PLZ Soccer,

Fan discontent at Celtic is growing, and on The Football Show one supporter summed up the mood towards the board: "They like their money, but not the fans".

The fan argued that the problem at the club is no longer a shortage of resources. Celtic has money, the fan said, but is not spending it, and that is where the frustration now lies.

The fan was also clear that supporters are not asking for multi-million spending. The demands set out on the show were narrower than that.

What supporters want

Ambition in Europe. The fan said supporters want to see the club aim higher on the European stage.

Better recruitment. Rather than big outlay, the call was for the club to be smarter in the market.

Better communication with the board. Supporters want the board to engage with them more effectively.

Why it matters

The distinction drawn on the show is an important one. The criticism is not that Celtic should spend whatever it takes. It is about how the money the club has is being used, and how the board speaks to the people who fill the stands. A board can answer a demand for lavish spending by pointing to financial prudence. A complaint about ambition, recruitment and communication is harder to deflect in the same way.
