Muniz cancels out Murphy as Fulham and Newcastle draw 1-1

Two goals in three late minutes at Craven Cottage left Fulham and Newcastle level on matchday 10, ending a run of decisive meetings between them.

Fulham and Newcastle shared a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, with both goals arriving inside a three-minute spell late in the second half. Jacob Murphy put Newcastle ahead in the 80th minute and Rodrigo Muniz equalised for Fulham in the 83rd.

For eighty minutes the Premier League matchday 10 fixture had produced nothing on the scoreboard. When the breakthrough came, the lead lasted barely long enough to settle. That shape of game tends to leave both sides with mixed feelings: Newcastle were ten minutes from an away win, and Fulham were seven minutes from a home defeat.

How the goals came

  • 80 minutes: Jacob Murphy, Fulham 0-1 Newcastle
  • 83 minutes: Rodrigo Muniz, Fulham 1-1 Newcastle

Murphy's goal looked as though it might decide a match that had stayed level for so long. A side that scores with ten minutes left would usually expect to see it through. Instead Muniz answered within three minutes, and neither team found a winner in what remained.

The speed of the reply is the detail that stands out. Fulham did not have long to chase the game, and they did not need it. Whether that says more about Fulham's response or about Newcastle's inability to hold what they had is a matter of interpretation. One quick equaliser is not enough to settle it either way.

A change from recent meetings

The draw broke a pattern. None of the most recent meetings between these clubs had ended level, and each of them had been settled by a one or two-goal margin.

Fulham won the most recent of those, 2-0 on 24 May 2026. Before that, Newcastle had won 2-1 on both 17 December 2025 and 25 October 2025. Going further back, Fulham won 2-1 at Newcastle on 1 February 2025 and 3-1 at home on 21 September 2024.

That sequence has swung between the two sides rather than favouring one, so a shared result fits the broader picture of an evenly matched fixture. It is still worth noting how different this game was from those earlier meetings. All of them produced at least two goals for the winning side. This one went eighty minutes without a goal and finished with one apiece.

What it leaves

It is hard to draw firm conclusions from a single game that stayed goalless until its final stages. The clearest reading is that neither side did enough to separate itself from the other, which matches the way their recent meetings have alternated.

For Newcastle, the regret will be how close they came. For Fulham, the point came from showing they could respond quickly when behind. Both readings are fair. Neither carries much weight on its own, and the next meeting may well swing back towards a decisive result, as most of their recent encounters have.

Murphy and Muniz were the names on the scoresheet. On a day that offered little else to separate the sides, that was where the match was decided.
