Rangers' avoidable errors cost them in 2-2 draw with Dundee

On The Football Show, Roughy said the two goals Rangers conceded against Dundee were self-inflicted after a strong second-half response.

Rangers have only themselves to blame for the 2-2 draw with Dundee, according to The Football Show, where the goals Derek McInnes's side conceded were described as "amateur".

Asked by presenter Peter whether the result was two points dropped, Roughy said it had been a game of two halves, a pattern he felt had followed Rangers through much of the season.

Dundee on top early

Roughy was full of praise for Dundee's first-half display. He called them "excellent" and pointed to "the man for man, the press, very aggressive" approach that unsettled Rangers. When Dundee scored, he said, "I felt as if they deserved that" over the balance of play.

After the break, he felt Rangers showed what McInnes had wanted in the first half. He noted that Minsu and Gassama got into the game, and that Rangers produced more combinations and carried more threat.

Two goals given away

Roughy was blunt about the goals: "The two goals that Rangers give away are amateur."

On the first, he said: "You can't go outside, try and flick a ball back to your goalkeeper with the outside of your right foot, from Dujon. You expect better."

He called Dundee's equaliser "slapstick" and "totally against the run of play". He described Fernandez playing back to a holding midfielder, who then passed to the other one. "So your two sixes are in essence deeper than your two centre-halves."

With 70 minutes on the clock and Rangers fully aware that Dundee were pressing man for man, Roughy questioned the decision to play into Dan Neil. He said "Dan Neil has to do better and protect the ball", but added that "the ball into him is ridiculous as well for me, because you're playing into an area when the guy's already jumped."

Neil's touch let him down, and Roughy said "his mis control has allowed the guy to pick his pocket, walk through to the goalkeeper and slot it in."

"I think Fernandez has to play forward." Roughy said the alternative was to go round to the goalkeeper, because "it's double the distance to jump for whoever wants to press him which gives the keeper a lot of time to assess the situation."

His conclusion was that "the two goals that they gave away were avoidable", and that from McInnes's point of view, Rangers had been in "a position of real strength".
