By Harvey Watkins,

St. Mirren beat Dundee FC 2-1 at The SMISA Stadium (St Mirren Park) on Saturday afternoon, in the tenth round of Scottish Premiership fixtures. All three goals came between the 20th and 74th minutes, and nothing changed after that. The result sat at 2-1 for the final quarter of an hour and whatever time was added on.

The goals

  • 20 minutes: Calvin Ramsay
  • 56 minutes: Eseosa Sule
  • 74 minutes: Bradley Fink

Calvin Ramsay scored the only goal of the first half, on 20 minutes, so one side went in at the interval a goal to the good. Eseosa Sule added the second goal of the afternoon 11 minutes after the restart. Bradley Fink's goal on 74 minutes was the last of the match.

The possible routes to 2-1

A 2-1 home win can be reached in three orders, and they tell quite different stories. If St. Mirren scored the first two, they were 2-0 up after 56 minutes and Fink's goal was a Dundee FC reply that set up a tense final stretch without producing an equaliser. If the sides traded the first two goals, the match was level at 1-1 after 56 minutes and Fink's goal was the winner, with St. Mirren then seeing out the last quarter of an hour.

The arithmetic sets some firm limits. Dundee FC scored once, so they were never two goals ahead. At no point after the 74th minute did the scoreline move, so whichever side was chasing the game in that final period could not find a way through. After 56 minutes the match was either 2-0 to St. Mirren or level at 1-1. A two-goal deficit for the visitors was the worst it ever became for them.

What the result shows

A one-goal home win settles nothing beyond the afternoon itself. The bare scoreline cannot separate a comfortable win that grew nervous late on from a level game decided by a single moment, and it would be wrong to read it as either. The margin was narrow and the evidence for anything broader is thin.

What can be said plainly is that St. Mirren scored twice at home and conceded once, and that the decisive period ran from the 56th to the 74th minute, when the match either tightened to a single goal or tipped from level to a home lead. Those 18 minutes held the outcome. After them, St. Mirren held on to what they had.

For Dundee FC, the trip to The SMISA Stadium (St Mirren Park) brought a goal but no points. For St. Mirren, it was a win by the smallest margin, which counts the same in the table as any other.
