Why can't Celtic and Rangers in Scotland produce enough football players for the Scottish Premiership? Why do young players at clubs like Hearts, Hibs and Motherwell also struggle to break into the first team?
Peter Martin is joined by Michael Grant and Hugh MacDonald to dig into the SFA's call for a summit on homegrown talent - why so few young Scottish players are breaking through, whether the academy system and the loan market are fit for purpose, and how you actually build a pathway to regular first-team football at the highest level. Honest, no-spin debate on one of the biggest questions in the Scottish game.
The panel doesn't dodge the hard truths. They ask whether new SFA chief football officer Craig Mulholland and chief executive Ian Maxwell can actually change anything when the SFA holds so little power over the clubs, and why the summit risks repeating a debate we have had for 15 years. They dig into the roadblocks: clubs who would rather buy a League Two player than trust a 17-year-old, managers who daren't take the risk because three defeats and the fans want them sacked, and the vested interests behind the 12-team league and the broadcast deal that is built around four Old Firm derbies.
Along the way: what the SFA's transition report got right (the cooperation loan agreements, and the clever attempt to appeal to clubs' finances through lower wage bills and future transfer income), why risk-taking has been coached out of young Scottish players, and how the old working-class production line that gave us Denis Law, Kenny Dalglish and Paul McStay has dried up in an era where kids no longer just take a ball out and play. There is real credit too for the clubs getting it right: Jens Berthel Askou's brave, expansive Motherwell, David Clarkson's academy pathway and the sale of Lennon Miller, and a Falkirk side that entertained and won its fans back.
They also weigh the forces pulling talent away, from English academies picking off teenagers to the irresistible pull of a move like Gannon Doak's, and ask whether the SFA should push FIFA on tougher registrations and transition payments to protect the system. Plus honest words on Steve Clarke's Scotland after a first World Cup in 28 years, the worrying lack of depth behind an ageing core of Andy Robertson, Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Ryan Christie, and what any of it means for a nation trying to compete in Europe.
Before the end: Andrew McKinlay steps down as Hearts CEO and what it says about the direction at Tynecastle, who could be the next Scotland manager, and the panel's predictions for Rangers, Hearts, Hibs and Motherwell in Europe this week.
