Hugh MacDonald says he wasn't surprised Celtic lost to Rangers, pointing to glaring flaws he's seen all season on the eye test rather than the stats. He argues Celtic are simply too easy to play through, with too much space in front of the defence, an issue that showed up against LASK and Ferencvaros in Europe and again against Rangers in the Old Firm.
Transcript:
I was surprised with the hammering, and I wasn't surprised that Celtic lost. Not in any way, because I've watched Celtic quite a lot this season, and there's glaring flaws in the team.
Flaws. We're talking about this: the stats test and the eye test. I was at the game, the home game, before the second leg, and I'm saying this isn't over, because if you were at Celtic v LASK, you would not have been convinced. I was walking out the stadium and talking to people, and nobody thought that was an overwhelming performance. Nobody. I mean, I would just think, well, three goals up, it should go through, but nobody was going to go out and put a mortgage on it.
And my test, if you know about the system... I'm not an analyst, I'm not a coach of any sort, but my test, again, is the simple thing: if you watch Celtic, they're too easy to play through. There's too much space in front. Now, more educated football minds will tell you why that is, but it happens all the time, and you see it. It doesn't happen just against LASK, it happens against Rangers, which is a level too.
