Here's the case that the officials got it spot on: the coaching staff flagged it straight away, and on the replay VAR had no option - the defender isn't looking at the ball, he's impeding the player trying to head it, and the ball drops right into that area. A clear penalty, and the referee was left no choice.

When I see it back... at the time I didn't think much of it. The goalie coach actually said straight away, "I think that could be a penalty." Then we broke away, and you kind of forget about it - and then they stop the game. But seeing it back now, I think the officials in VAR have got no option but to give it. He's not looking at the ball, he's impeding the player who's trying to head it, and the ball lands exactly in that area. That's the big issue. So it left the referee no choice but to give the penalty. I think it's the right call.
