Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson calls a Motherwell 0-4 Aberdeen defeat at Fir Park "extremely harshly punished" in the Scottish Premiership, pointing to a brutal stat: four goals conceded from just four shots on target, off 0.9 xG.
Johansson describes conceding 30 seconds into the second half as "a punch in the face" that broke a young side, who then stressed, lost their structure and went too direct. His main frustration is not staying true to themselves after the break, in a night he insists rarely happens across a football season.
Transcript:
After 30 seconds we concede a goal, after a build-up phase. I think that's a punch in the face, for sure, like at St Mirren in the first half. But I don't like the reaction there. We then start to stress, and it's so difficult emotionally for a pretty young team, in that moment, to keep their cool and stay on track. In that moment we're stressing, we're losing the structure a little bit, and certainly around the third goal we are very direct, playing a lot of balls in the air very early. So I don't think we played the second half particularly well, no.
What causes you the most frustration: that you didn't threaten their goal, or the manner of the goals you conceded?
The frustration for me is mainly that we're not staying true to ourselves in the second half. That's my main frustration, to be honest. And then you concede four goals from four shots on target, from 0.9 xG. Of course, you get extremely harshly punished, and that's difficult to take. It doesn't happen many times in a football season that that happens.
