Post-Match Reaction | Tony Docherty Reflects on Heavy 4-0 Defeat to Hibs | Dundee FC | Scottish Premiership 2024/25
Dundee manager Tony Docherty gives an honest and emotional assessment of his side’s 4-0 loss to Hibernian at Easter Road. In this in-depth post-match interview, Docherty doesn’t hold back as he breaks down what went wrong on the day and stresses the need for a stronger, more consistent mentality from his players in the final stretch of the season.
After four solid league performances — including wins over St Mirren and Dundee United, a draw with St Johnstone, and a close match against Rangers — Docherty admits the first-half showing against Hibs came as a complete surprise and was well below the standards he expects.
📌 Key Talking Points from Tony Docherty's Post Match Interview:
⚽ First-Half No-Show:
Docherty admits his side "didn't turn up" in the first half, lacking the aggression, bravery, and confidence that had been a feature of their recent form. He questions whether Hibs’ reputation played a role in the team’s timid approach and passive mindset.
🧠 Mentality and Mindset:
The Dundee boss repeatedly stresses that consistency of performance is essential, and that playing on the back foot due to external factors is not acceptable. He urges his team to believe in their own identity, regardless of the opposition.
🔥 Improved Second Half – But Too Late:
Docherty was encouraged by the start of the second half, where Dundee looked the more dominant team. He highlighted the impact of Murray Samuels at left-back and praised the attacking intent shown before the game spiralled out of reach.
⚠️ Costly Defensive Errors:
While chasing the game at 1-0, Dundee conceded three more goals in quick succession. Docherty points to the poor manner of the second, third, and fourth goals, calling for more accountability and composure — especially when pushing for an equaliser.
💡 Learning Lessons – Without Overreacting:
He’s clear that while the defeat is painful, it must be used as a learning experience. He balances his disappointment with a focus on the positive performances leading up to this game, and insists the team is still capable of achieving strong results in the run-in.
📊 Tight Scottish Premeirship Table – Everything Still to Play For:
With a couple of results potentially flipping the narrative at the bottom of the table, Docherty remains optimistic. He knows that his side are more than capable of climbing with the right application and consistency over the final five fixtures.
🩺 Injury Updates:
Docherty confirms that Luke McCowan was feeling his hamstring heading into the game, and Lee Ashcroft suffered a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury in training. He stresses the need to manage recovery smartly over the two-week break.
