"Is Maradona getting pushed out?" Peter Martin, Alan Rough and Gordon Parks on whether Cristiano Ronaldo belongs in the top three of all time. Roughy says every Portugal player wants Ronaldo in the team. Peter says his stats put him in the top five, maybe the top three, and that his personality is misjudged given what he does away from the cameras. Then the big one: if it's Pele, Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona and Cruyff, who drops out?

Transcript:

...was your thing, right? But the explosion of joy from scoring a goal is the pinnacle of football, surely.

I would think if you asked any Portuguese international player, would they want Ronaldo in the team or not, they'd want him in the team. It gives you something. You can see when he scores a goal, okay, he's a bit singular, he does his thing, but you don't see any Portuguese players complaining when he scores a goal or wins a game for them. And that's what he does.

Yeah, absolutely. Roughy, you're absolutely right. I think it's a sad end to his international career. He's still going to try and crack a thousand goals in domestic football, which I think he will do without a shadow of a doubt. But it's a sad end to his international career. And I think, for people who don't like him because he's a poser, or he's gobby, or he's a showman, that's not the issue. You have to look at his stats. When Ronaldo eventually steps off the stage completely and hangs up the boots, I think he's in the top five greatest ever footballers. I'd go as far as to say he's really pushing to be in the top three, because the stats are way off the chart. The fact that some people might not consider him that is basically because maybe they don't like his personality. But I think even that is misrepresented, because of the work he does in the background, for charity, for kids. An example to kids, an example to athletes, on how to conduct yourself and how to work at the top of your game to last longer. I think he's in the running for the top three of all time.

Yeah. And a lot of the aspects of his personality, and how he presents himself, is what makes him the player that he is. Special players, do they exude a confidence that upsets people? Of course. But it makes them that extra special. I watched a documentary about him, and the disciplines that he has within his life, and the goodness that he has, you're right, as a person, for things that he doesn't want publicity for. They're separate. Ronaldo walks in the building and all the focus is on him, because that's the way he is and presents himself. That's what makes him one of the best. Top three, yes.

Yeah, absolutely. I'm sorry, I mean, somebody's going to go mental at me here, but if you're thinking, well, who's the top three? Well, it's Pele, it's Messi, it's Ronaldo, it's Maradona, it's Cruyff. Is Maradona getting pushed out?

I think he would get pushed out when you realise what Ronaldo's achieved in the game. Ballon d'Ors a-plenty...
