"Nobody is going to challenge Dermot Desmond at Celtic." Matt McGlone of Celts for Change on why he sees the Celtic board as "one voice", why change won't come from within, and the other shareholders: Lindsell Train, who he says hold 15%, and two more on 11 and 6%. "If Lindsell Train decided to sell, that would be massive." From Straight Talk with Matt McGlone, recorded at the end of August 2026 (first published 1 September).

Transcript:

Well, you know, I don't see a board as a collective here. I see a board as one voice and that board will listen to what that guy up there says. So that board are not going to have a meeting and say we're going to challenge him. We don't like this. That's not going to happen. Nobody is going to challenge Dermot Desmond at Celtic currently, right now. So to answer your question, it needs a massive change. And who is that change? That's the thing.

I remember back in 1994, our great fear was the Bank of Scotland, who held Celtic's account, were going to hold so much of Celtic's debt that they would have a big say. Change is needed, there's no doubt about it. Can it be changed from within? If they turn round and sign five quality players, very unlikely, before the next midweek, at the end of the transfer window, you would say, well, okay, they've done quite well, because they've done well bringing in a couple of forward players, three players, whatever. But it doesn't look like change is going to come from within.

And nobody at that club from chief executive to board members or anybody else has got, say, will challenge the guy who's got the most shares, most individual shares. But there are other shares out there, and I was talking about Willie Haughey's idea. You know, the New York bank, which goes under... I'm sure these people have never... haven't even been to Celtic Park. Lindsell Train Investment. Nick Train is the guy that runs that. They trade under the New York bank. They currently hold 15% of Celtic. Haven't even been to Celtic Park. Not interested in Celtic. They're people who have been probably by the person we're talking about, been advised to invest their money into shares of people that put shares all around the world in different companies and he's probably said to them, put your shares here, I'll look after them and I'll speak for them. So there's 15% and you've got two other shareholders on 11 and 6%. There's 17%. So there's 30-odd percent, which could well... if Lindsell Train decided to sell, that would be massive. I'm sure there'd be concerned Celtic fans out there ready to buy them. But you need a vehicle there.
