Jagiellonia Białystok 2-1 Rangers, Benfica 6-1 Hearts, Hibernian 2-1 Shkendija, HJK 1-1 Motherwell. Misery for some Scottish clubs in Europe.
The misery continues for Scottish clubs in Europe. On a grim night across the Europa League and Conference League qualifiers, three of the four Scottish sides came away battered - and Derek McInnes was, in his own words, left raging at his defence.
Rangers lost 2-1 away to Jagiellonia Bialystok. After a fortuitous early own goal handed them the lead, they fell apart at the back - two soft goals conceded, Fernandez caught out, and McInnes admitting it looked "like Rangers from last season." He still has to bolt the back door, but Rangers should have the quality to overturn the tie at Ibrox.
Hearts were humiliated 6-1 by Benfica in Lisbon - a laughable first-half penalty and one calamitous goal after another. Robbie Vrancken's side have now shipped 12 goals in three European games and simply cannot defend; they drop into a Conference League play-off, with more misery likely at Tynecastle next Thursday.
Motherwell drew with HJK Helsinki - full marks to Alfred Johansson's side, who stayed calm and took their penalty through the roof of the net, though ex-Celtic striker Teemu Pukki pulled one back. They have a fighting chance at Fir Park.
Hibs were the one bright spot, beating Shkendija 2-1 - a brilliant flick from Owen Elding and a late Warren O'Hora winner - but David Gray's side looked nervy and travel to North Macedonia with plenty still to do.
The bigger worry: Scottish football feels like it's on a downward trend, and the league structure and youth development both need addressing.
