Interim boss John Potter speaks after Hibs 1-1 Aberdeen, on a point earned at the end of an emotional week for the club following David Gray's sacking.
How did John Potter reflect on the draw?
Potter takes the point but is honest that, at a club like Hibs and at home, you need to win. He felt the second half was much better, that Hibs got into good areas without quite committing the extra body or the extra pass, and that they had to stay wary of Aberdeen's threat on the break. A fair result, he says, but a little disappointing not to find a winner.
What did Potter say about David Gray?
This is where it hits hardest. Potter pays a warm tribute to David Gray, a man who spent 12 years at the club, "a brilliant manager" and "a friend to everybody". He describes a difficult week, sitting the players down and telling them they still had a job to do, and admits some of them were visibly hurting, even before kick-off. David Gray, he says, would want the players trying to win games.
What is the next Hibs manager inheriting?
Potter is clear: a good group of players who work hard, train well and give 100%. Recent results have gone against them by fine margins, a missed chance here, a red card there, but never, he insists, through a lack of effort.
Transcript:
John, were you uh happy with a point considering how difficult it's been this week? Uh yeah, probably. I don't like saying that though because when you're at a club like this and you're at home, you need to win games of football and we've maybe not done that the last little bit. So, you always want to win.
I think in terms of the game, we had some good moments. Second half was much better. I think I still think the first half we got in good areas, but didn't didn't maybe commit that extra body or a bit slop of the extra pass. Uh but second half was much better.
The one thing I would say, I think if anyone was going to win it, I did think we were pushing for that, but I didn't a massive threat going the other way on the break. So, we had to had to keep kind of numbers back just to make sure that they didn't hit us going the other way. Um, so yeah, probably probably a fair result, but maybe a little bit disappointed that we couldn't get the winner. Can you explain your job this week and how difficult it's been with the players?
Yeah, it's difficult. Look, when when when somebody like Dave leaves a club, he's been here 12 years. He was a a brilliant manager. He was a friend to everybody.
Been here a long time. Knew everybody. Everybody knew him really well. So, uh it was difficult especially Thursday.
Um I said Friday just sat with the players and and said that we have to go on a job. There's a little break after that. We have to try and win a game of football. So, but you could still see it and some of them it's and even today before the game you could see some of them are hurting a little bit.
Um but it's it's football and it's important that we just try and move on. and Dave would want the players to be want to try and win games and at the end of the day that's her job to try and win games of football for us. You know the inner sanctum of this club. What do you think the next manager is inheriting?
Look, there's a there's a good group of [clears throat] players that really really work hard every day. Um they train well. Um they will always give 100%. There's absolutely no doubt it doesn't always go our way and it's not the last little while, but that's those small percentages that can go either way in a game by a a missed chance or a red card or or whatever that means to be.
Those small things maybe didn't go away, but that's not through a lack of effort and it never has been since I've been in here at the club anyway. So, um in terms of that, the group of players, there is a little break. Hopefully, we can get some players back fit and available. Um and as I said, there's a good group of players that willing to work hard and try and win games.
