‘A frustrating afternoon’ | Stephen Robinson FULL Post Match Reaction Aberdeen 0-0 Kilmarnock - A deflated Stephen Robinson reflects as his side drew 0-0 vs Kilmarnock, Aberdeen still fail to score a single goal from open play.
Stephen Robinson Post Match Interview Transcript:
Another frustrating day in the office, Stephen. How would you sum that one up?
A frustrating day, a tired performance. We looked jaded after the two games in the week. It was always the fear. We tried to freshen up a little bit, and the performance just lacked energy, it lacked pace about it. We got a reaction at half-time with the changes, there was a bit more energy, but we lacked the finishing touch or the quality needed to win the game. So we got what we deserved.
It was pedestrian in the first half, not what you wanted, but when you're having to change the team at half-time to get that energy, it's difficult to build the relationships you need to win the game.
Yeah, but ultimately you've got to try and win the game, so we have to make these decisions. I didn't think we were going to get any more energy out of the team if we didn't make changes, and we did, we got more energy. Did we get more quality? Questionable. But it's a frustrating afternoon. The two games have caught up with us. It looked very much like it caught up with us, and we didn't have enough within the group to grind the result out. Sometimes you don't deserve it, and I don't think we deserved that today. A point was probably a fair result, but at home we have to expect better.
Is the positive that your keeper played well, kept a clean sheet, so at least you're not going into the cup game with a negative?
Yeah, the negative is the actual performance. As we all know, it looked hard, it looked jaded and just a little bit lacklustre, which nobody sets out to do. Sometimes you're able to grind out those results, but we're all disappointed with the performance. We're not hiding away from that. We expect the criticism that we'll get and we have to deal with that.
Do you need more from individuals to step up?
I think we need more from everybody. The players are not trying to run away from that, the staff and myself are not trying to run away from that. We need more. We had two very, very difficult tests in terms of the Sunday game and then the Wednesday game, against Rangers and Celtic, and it looked to me like we just didn't have the energy to be creative. We looked jaded. We tried changing things, but everybody has to step up. We know that isn't good enough today, we know that the result isn't good enough. Sometimes you can hide that by nicking a 1-0, which we could have done, but we didn't manage to do it. So we go again.
Was that a tough call to substitute your captain?
I don't think it was a tough call, or that I have to single Kevin out particularly. We needed more energy. Kevin did take a knock to his calf, he's taken an injury to his calf. But I think Kevin accepts that if you need to shake the team up, he won't walk about with a hump. He accepts it's a team game. We got a little bit of a reaction, but without the end product at the end, you understand the expectation that comes with this one.
Yeah, 100%. It doesn't matter, when you have a tired and jaded performance like that you're going to get criticism, so we accept that and we have to put it right. We have to get more energy into the team for next week, and more belief as well. The belief gets a little bit safe when you're tired, you do that. But yeah, the fans are 100% right. I thought the fans actually got behind the team really, really well today to try and get energy out of us, and it just wasn't to be. So no complaints. I think we all accept that and we have to deal with that.
You've made a lot of changes to the team over the weeks. What do you need to do to get that extra energy for next week?
Well, obviously we won't have three games in the week, that helps. We don't play Rangers and Celtic within a short time, which helped. So I'm expecting a lot more energy next week.
It's a dead leg, so we expect... Three games in a week with that energy, it just ran out, which was disappointing because we needed him on the pitch, but he gave absolutely everything, as did Chris [surname unclear]. Their legs just went from under them, unfortunately, in the last few minutes. Cheers.
