Ashley Hay double gives Dundee FC 3-1 win over Kilmarnock

Dundee FC beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Dens Park on MatchDay 11, with Ashley Hay scoring twice after the match had been level with a quarter of an hour left.

Dundee FC beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Dens Park on Wednesday evening. The margin flatters what was a tight contest for most of the night. With 15 minutes remaining the sides were level at 1-1, and the decisive moments all came late.

The headline belongs to Ashley Hay. He scored in the 83rd minute and again in the 94th, turning a finely balanced Scottish Premiership fixture into a comfortable-looking home win. It was a two-goal contribution that settled the outcome and then put it beyond doubt.

How the goals came

The first half produced one goal. Joe Bevan opened the scoring on 32 minutes, and that was the only breakthrough before the interval.

The match then went without another goal until the 75th minute, when Joe Hugill scored to make it 1-1. That left a quarter of an hour plus stoppage time for either side to find a winner, and a long stretch in which the game could have tilted either way.

Three of the four goals came in the final 20 minutes. Whatever had happened over the preceding hour and a quarter, the result was decided in the closing stages.

Hay's late intervention

Hay's first, on 83 minutes, was the winner. It gave Dundee FC a 2-1 lead at a point when Kilmarnock had little time left to respond.

His second arrived in the 94th minute, deep into stoppage time, and made it 3-1. By then it was the goal that removed any remaining tension rather than the one that decided the match. It still matters for the record. A one-goal lead in added time is a nervous thing to protect, and a two-goal cushion ended the evening on Dundee FC's terms.

Two goals in the last ten minutes of normal time and stoppage time is the kind of contribution that defines how a match is remembered. Here it was the difference between a draw that had looked plausible for much of the second half and a home win.

What the scoreline says

A 3-1 result reads as clear-cut. The sequence of goals tells a more even story. The sides were level for long spells and separated only in the closing minutes, and it would be a stretch to read the final margin as a measure of the gap between them on the night.

What the result does give Dundee FC is three points from a MatchDay 11 fixture at home, secured in the period of the game where matches are most often lost. For Kilmarnock, it was an evening on which they were level with 15 minutes to play and came away with nothing.

One match is a thin basis for wider conclusions, and this one turned on a short burst of play at the end. For now the simple account will do. Dundee FC won 3-1, and Ashley Hay's late double was the reason.
