McCann on the Celtic share issue: "I cannot let these people down" -Bernard Ponsonby recalls two stories Fergus McCann told on camera about the Celtic share issue: supporters queuing in the rain for the prospectus after a League Cup final defeat, and a man holding up a baby as Celtic's youngest supporter. Ponsonby describes McCann as direct and not one to be kicked around.

Bernard Ponsonby recalls the two stories Fergus McCann told him on camera about Celtic's share issue: looking down Kerrydale Street from his office as supporters queued "all the way down to London Road in the rain" for the prospectus, after the League Cup final had been lost to Raith Rovers, and the man in a supermarket who held his baby up in front of him. Both times: "I cannot let these people down." And Ponsonby's verdict: "He wouldn't be kicked around." From Straight Talk with Bernard Ponsonby.

...And there were two stories that McCann told on camera. And if you remember, at the time of the share issue, Celtic had lost the League Cup final at Ibrox against Raith Rovers. And he was in his office at Celtic Park, looking down Kerrydale Street, and the prospectus for the share issue was being collected by supporters. He said, "We'd just lost a cup final. It was absolutely bucketing down from the heavens, and these people were queuing all the way down to London Road in the rain, after a cup final had been lost, to have their stake." And he said, "I just looked at that, and it was at that..." he said, "at that point I thought, I cannot let these people down."
Yeah. And the other story that he tells... and I mean, Fergus wasn't one for emotion, because he had that very stoical exterior, but he told the story of being in a supermarket, and there's a guy with a baby, and the guy stops him and holds the baby in front of him. You know, it's almost like Kunta Kinte in Roots. It's almost like Kunta Kinte in Roots. And he said, "Fergus, Celtic's youngest supporter." And he said he just kept in the back of his mind, "I cannot let these people down."
And there was nothing at all which was sophisticated or complicated. He was just direct. He just said what he was going to do. He did it. He wouldn't be kicked around.
