Rangers manager Danny Rohl says his priority was picking a team to beat Hibs and not selecting Tavernier to start. Did James Tavernier deserve a better goodbye? Rangers manager Danny Rohl defends his decision to leave the long-serving captain on the bench for what was likely Tavernier's last-ever home game at Ibrox — Rangers 1-2 Hibernian, 13 May 2026. 11 years at the club. 144 goals. Every domestic trophy. And it ended with him walking out of the stadium in a suit, having to be talked back in.
"It was also my wish that he gets a proper goodbye." Danny Rohl pushes back on the James Tavernier walkout narrative — Rangers' manager explains his priorities for the 13 May game against Hibernian at Ibrox, what he told the captain about start vs bench, and what the perfect Tavernier send-off would have looked like.
🟦 DANNY ROHL — VERBATIM:
"I think general, when you come to a point where we are now, then of course we can reflect and can say 'okay maybe at this point and this point we could speak more in detail.' But I think I was from the first part very clear and open to him. And I think it was the reason why it was also my wish and suggest that he gets a proper goodbye on Wednesday."
"But also this time I always said him 'it could be you start, it could be you come from the bench — this is not the point.'"
"If you ask me what was in my head for this day, it was — at first, take three points, win a game. See with his family walking in, take the trophy what he deserves, walk around the stadium, and then finally get some minutes on the pitch."
