Did James Tavernier deserve a better goodbye? Rangers manager Danny Rohl defends his decision to leave the long-serving captain on the bench for what was likely Tavernier's last-ever home game at Ibrox — Rangers 1-2 Hibernian, 13 May 2026. 11 years at the club. 144 goals. Every domestic trophy. And it ended with him walking out of the stadium in a suit, having to be talked back in.
🟦 DANNY ROHL — VERBATIM:
"I thought, this is maybe his last chance to play at home. I give him a call… I convinced him that he can move this decision maybe later. He said, yeah okay, he will be available for today."
"This is also my job to make decisions who starts and who is a sub. I make my decision. I was very transparent with him. I wished him that he get some minutes."
"He didn't accept that he will not start today. And then he stay away from the team. And this is the story."
"I was really looking forward to give him minutes today because he deserved this — to be 11 years here. I think a good goodbye to be on the pitch final whistle should be like him."
🟦 SO — DID TAV DESERVE BETTER?
Drop your verdict in the comments. Was Rohl right to make the call he thought was best for the team — or should sentiment have come into it for a captain of 11 years and 144 goals?
