"It would be the biggest in Scottish football domestic history" - Tam McManus delivers the comparative-bombast verdict on a potential Hearts title in 2025-26, arguing that toppling Celtic and Rangers in the modern financial era surpasses what Sir Alex Ferguson achieved with Aberdeen in the 1980s.
Tam's case: not Celtic's European Cups, not Rangers' Cup Winners' Cup, not Aberdeen's Cup Winners' Cup - DOMESTICALLY, a Hearts title against today's Old Firm financial muscle would be the greatest achievement Scottish football has ever seen.
▸ THE QUOTE THAT DRIVES IT
"This Hearts team, if they do win it, will deserve to win it. They've been top for most of the season - going up against two giants with massive budgets." - Tam McManus
"Where does Derek McInnes rank if he were to pull this off, when you consider the difference in spending power now?" - Tam McManus
"It would be the biggest in Scottish football domestic history." - Tam McManus
"For the last 10, 15, 20 years - anyone toppling Celtic or Rangers and winning the league - I thought it was impossible." - Tam McManus
▸ THE FERGIE COMPARISON
- Aberdeen under Sir Alex Ferguson 1978-86: 3 league titles (1979-80, 1983-84, 1984-85)
- Plus 4 Scottish Cups, 1 League Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup + Super Cup (1983)
- Tam's argument: the financial gap was narrower in Ferguson's era
- Today's Old Firm spending vs Hearts' wage budget = a far wider gulf
- That makes the achievement bigger in 2026 than 1980
▸ THE TITLE-RACE PICTURE - 3 GAMES TO GO
- Hearts 76 points - 3 clear of Celtic
- Hearts have the better goal difference
- POSSIBLE CLINCH: Hearts beat Motherwell Sat 9 May + Celtic drop points vs Rangers Sun 10 May
- Last-day decider: Hearts vs Celtic at Parkhead Sat 16 May
- First Hearts title since 1959-60 - 66 years
