Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson gives a deadline-day update on his transfer business, admitting he would love to "reinforce every position" but is not sure Aberdeen can add more. After a summer of change - 10 free transfers plus three signings - Robinson says he is still looking to strengthen if the right player is available, but only if they are significantly better and do not block the pathway of young players like winger Andrew Fisa. He also speaks with blunt honesty about the fringe players who are not in his plans.
WHAT DID STEPHEN ROBINSON SAY ABOUT ABERDEEN'S DEADLINE DAY?
Robinson called himself "a selfish manager" who wants to improve every position, but stressed Aberdeen have already brought in a lot of new faces and any further signing has to clearly improve the squad without blocking young talent. Aberdeen are still looking, but only for the right addition.
WHAT DID ROBINSON SAY ABOUT PLAYERS OUT OF THE SQUAD?
He was honest: "If they're not involved, I don't deem them to be good enough to be in the squad." Robinson said he has had tough, honest conversations with the players who are not part of his plans, but insisted everyone still gets a chance to force their way back in through training.
Stephen Robinson press conference transcript:
"Yeah, I'd like to reinforce every position, I'm a selfish manager, so of course, but I'm not sure we'll be able to do that. We've brought in a lot of players, 10 free transfers with three signings. As I say, there's been a lot of change. Obviously we've paid a little bit of money for one. If there was anything left, of course, there's certain areas I want to strengthen. We've got two wingers in the building, we've got young Andrew Fisa coming through as well, so if we bring somebody in, we have to be careful we don't block younger players' pathways. And they have to be significantly better, of course. So if there's a chance to improve the squad, then yeah, definitely, we're still looking.
Yeah, of course. If they're good enough, if they train well enough... they're not involved for a reason. I have the luxury of seeing them every day, and if they're not involved, then I don't deem them to be good enough to be in the squad. I've never known a manager not put a player in a squad that would make sure you win a game or keep you in a job. So I do it quite honestly. I've been honest with all the players who I believe won't be a part of what we're doing going forward, and that's tough, those are tough conversations. But when the window closes, everyone still has that chance. They have a chance every day in training, and if they step up and show us what talent they have, then of course they'll be involved. I wouldn't be stupid enough not to."
