“I had just turned seventeen and said to my Dad that I would make my debut for Troyes in France and score for my first goal for them before the end of the season.

I was determined to do it and set all my focus on getting into the first team. I achieved my dream in the match Troyes v Nantes in French League 1 that season with a header from outside the box against a future French goalkeeper Mikaël Landreau.

On that day my Dad cried in the stand as he watched his son’s prediction come true. He came down to meet me after the game with tears in his eyes and holding a piece of paper. My Dad had written down the words I had said to him and the date I said it. He had kept the piece of paper from that day until the goal was scored.

It is a moment that will live with me forever.”
