Brighton's tight margins meet Brentford's open games

Brighton bring a run of low-scoring results and three clean sheets into Sunday's meeting with Brentford, whose recent matches have been far more open.

By Harvey Watkins,

Brighton host Brentford at the American Express Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Matchday 10, and the two sides arrive with recent records that point in different directions. Brighton's last five matches have produced eight goals across both ends of the pitch. Brentford's have produced sixteen. That contrast is the most useful place to start.

Brighton's recent run has been low on goals

Brighton have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five, scoring four and conceding four. Three of those five ended without them conceding. The two wins were both by a single goal, 1-0 at Getafe on Wednesday and 1-0 at Man City on 31 October. Three days before that win they drew 2-2 at City. The other draw was goalless at Jablonec, and the one defeat was a 2-0 loss at Liverpool.

Two caveats apply. All five of those matches were away from home, so Sunday is Brighton's first game at Falmer in this sequence, and their recent form says little about how they play there. And four goals in five is a modest return. A side that keeps winning by one goal is a side that leaves little margin when things go against it.

Brentford's games have stayed open

Brentford have one win, two draws and two defeats from their last five, with eight scored and eight conceded. They have scored in every one of those matches, but kept only one clean sheet, in the 2-0 home win over Nottingham Forest on 31 October.

Their away results are the more relevant ones here. They drew 2-2 at Aston Villa and 1-1 at Hull City, and lost 3-2 at Sunderland. That is five scored and six conceded on the road, without a win. Both sides have also faced Liverpool recently, Brentford losing 2-1 at home and Brighton 2-0 away, which separates them very little.

Recent meetings have favoured Brighton

The five most recent meetings read as follows:

  • 21 Feb 2026: Brentford 0-2 Brighton
  • 22 Nov 2025: Brighton 2-1 Brentford
  • 19 Apr 2025: Brentford 4-2 Brighton
  • 27 Dec 2024: Brighton 0-0 Brentford
  • 3 Apr 2024: Brentford 0-0 Brighton

Brighton won the last two and have lost only one of the five. Brentford's 4-2 win in April 2025 stands out as the exception in a series that has otherwise been tight, with two goalless draws in 2024. The two most recent meetings at Falmer ended 2-1 to Brighton and 0-0. Five matches across two and a half years is a short record, but it leans one way.

The view

On balance, Brighton look slightly the better placed. Their defensive record over the last five is strong, they have the better of recent meetings, and Brentford have not won away in their last three on the road.

The case for the other outcome is real, though. Brentford have scored in every recent match, and Brighton have not been scoring freely. If Brentford find a goal, Brighton's habit of narrow margins could turn a win into a draw quickly. My view is that a close Brighton win is the most likely single outcome, with a draw not far behind, and that a high-scoring game would run against what both sides' recent meetings have tended to produce.
