Man Utd v Aston Villa: two leaky defences meet at Old Trafford

Man Utd host Aston Villa on Sunday with neither side keeping a clean sheet in five, while recent meetings have leaned towards the home side.

By Harvey Watkins,

The most telling number before Sunday's meeting at Old Trafford is the same for both clubs: nought. Neither Man Utd nor Aston Villa has kept a clean sheet in their last five matches, and between them they have conceded 21 goals in that spell. Whatever else this fixture turns on, recent evidence does not point towards a tight, low-scoring afternoon.

Man Utd's recent results

Man Utd come into Matchday 10 with one win from their last five, and that win only arrived on Tuesday. Before the 3-2 victory over Roma on 3 November, they had lost three in a row: 4-1 at Como, 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 2-0 at Chelsea. In those three defeats they scored once and conceded nine.

The 1-1 draw at Leeds United on 18 October completes the run. Across the five matches the record reads 5 scored and 12 conceded, an average of more than two goals against per game. The Roma result showed they can score freely when things go their way, but it also came with two goals conceded, so it is hard to read it as the defence turning a corner.

Aston Villa's recent results

Aston Villa's run has gone the other way. Late October brought back-to-back home wins, 3-1 against Viking and then a 2-1 victory over Man City on 24 October. Since then they have not won in three. They lost 3-0 at Bournemouth, drew 1-1 at home to Fulham and were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona on 3 November.

That makes one goal scored and seven conceded in their last three matches, and both of the heavy defeats came away from home. Over five games Villa have scored 6 and conceded 9, slightly better than Man Utd on both counts, but the direction of travel is less encouraging than the overall figures suggest.

One shared result stands out. Both sides lost by three clear goals to Bournemouth within four days of each other, Man Utd at home and Villa on the road. It is a single data point, but it underlines how similar their recent defensive troubles have been.

The recent meetings

The head-to-head record favours Man Utd. In the five most recent meetings they have won three, drawn one and lost one, scoring eight goals to Villa's four.

  • 15 Mar 2026: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa
  • 21 Dec 2025: Aston Villa 2-1 Man Utd
  • 25 May 2025: Man Utd 2-0 Aston Villa
  • 6 Oct 2024: Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd
  • 11 Feb 2024: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

Man Utd won both of the two most recent meetings at Old Trafford, by 3-1 and 2-0. Villa's only win in this run came at home in December. Five matches spread over more than two years is a modest sample, though, and the head-to-head sits awkwardly alongside Man Utd's current form.

How it might go

The case for the home side rests on that recent record against Villa and on Tuesday's win, which at least ended a damaging run. The case for Villa rests on a slightly better five-game return and the fact that they beat Man City less than a month ago.

Neither case is strong. My view, held loosely, is that goals at both ends look more likely than not, given that neither defence has managed a clean sheet in five attempts. Beyond that, the evidence is finely balanced, and a draw would sit as comfortably with these numbers as a win for either side.
