Porto pull clear of ten-man Napoli to win 4-1 at the Dragão
Porto led early, were pegged back before half-time, then scored three times in the last 20 minutes to beat Napoli 4-1 in the Champions League.
By Harvey Watkins,
For 70 minutes at the Estádio do Dragão this looked like an evenly poised Champions League tie. By the final whistle Porto had won 4-1, with three goals in the closing stages turning a tight Matchday 4 meeting with Napoli into a comfortable margin.
A three-goal win sounds emphatic. The scoreline is accurate, but it compresses a match that stayed level for long spells into a single verdict.
An early lead, then a leveller before the break
Porto went ahead after 11 minutes through Jan Bednarek, an early goal that gave the home side something to build on. They could not stretch the lead before half-time, and Napoli made them pay.
Two minutes before the interval Scott McTominay equalised. A goal at that point changes the character of a half-time team talk. Napoli went in level rather than chasing the game, and the second half began with nothing between the sides.
Three goals in 19 minutes
The match stayed at 1-1 until the 71st minute, when Gabri Veiga restored Porto's lead. That was the decisive moment. Until then the evening could have gone either way; after it, Napoli needed to come forward with less than 20 minutes left, and the game opened up in Porto's favour.
Nine minutes later Jakub Kiwior made it 3-1. A two-goal cushion with ten minutes remaining is not certain to hold at this level, but it shifted the burden almost entirely onto the visitors.
Napoli's task became harder still in the 88th minute, when Rafa Marín was shown a straight red card. They played the remaining minutes with ten men, and in the 90th minute Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty to complete the scoring.
What the scoreline tells us
The timeline matters more than the final figure. Porto's lead at 3-1 came before the dismissal, so the red card did not decide the result, and Napoli's numerical disadvantage lasted only a couple of minutes plus whatever was added on. The fourth goal widened the margin; it did not change the outcome.
What decided it was Porto's spell between the 71st and 80th minutes. Level for most of the evening, they found two goals in quick succession at the point when matches tend to be settled, and Napoli had no reply.
Four different Porto players scored, which suggests the goals came from across the side rather than from a single source. That is a modest observation from one match, and it would be unwise to read too much into it.
Goals and key moments
- 11' Jan Bednarek (Porto) 1-0
- 43' Scott McTominay (Napoli) 1-1
- 71' Gabri Veiga (Porto) 2-1
- 80' Jakub Kiwior (Porto) 3-1
- 88' Rafa Marín (Napoli) sent off

For Porto, a win in which patience was rewarded. For Napoli, a night on which a hard-earned equaliser counted for little once the home side found their second wind.
