Achilleas Poungouras and Taxiarchis Fountas scored within nine minutes after the break as OFI Crete won 2-0 at Turner Stadium on Matchday 4.

OFI Crete won 2-0 away to Hapoel BS at Turner Stadium on Thursday night. Both goals came in a short spell early in the second half, and the visitors held that lead for the remaining half-hour and more to take the points in this Europa League Matchday 4 fixture.

Achilleas Poungouras opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Taxiarchis Fountas added the second in the 56th. Those were the only goals of the night.

How the scoring unfolded

The match was goalless at half-time, so whatever the first 45 minutes contained, neither side had found a way through. That changed almost immediately after the restart. Poungouras scored two minutes into the second half, and Fountas doubled the advantage nine minutes later.

Read purely from the timings, the decisive passage was brief. In the space of those nine minutes OFI Crete moved from level to two goals clear, and the scoreline did not move again. Hapoel BS had more than half an hour after the second goal to respond and did not score.

The minutes of the goals are the only detail of the match itself recorded here. They show when OFI Crete scored, but not how, and they say nothing about how the rest of the game was played. A two-goal margin can follow a one-sided contest or a closely fought one, and the final score alone cannot settle which this was.

What the result shows

A few things can be said with confidence. OFI Crete scored twice away from home and kept a clean sheet. Hapoel BS were held scoreless on their own ground. And the visitors did their damage at the start of the second half rather than late on, which left them with the job of protecting a lead for a long stretch. They managed it.

For Hapoel BS, the difficulty was not only conceding twice but failing to find a goal in reply across the full 90 minutes. Two goals is a substantial gap to close, and they were unable to begin closing it.

A single result in context

This is one match, and it should be weighed as one. Without the earlier results from either side's campaign, it is not possible to say whether this win continues a pattern or breaks one, or what it means for either club's prospects in the competition. What it does provide is a clear outcome on the night: OFI Crete scored twice after the interval, conceded nothing, and left Turner Stadium with the win.
