Stojkovic and Beljo give Dinamo Zagreb win at Sunderland

Two first-half goals in 17 minutes earned Dinamo Zagreb a 2-0 Europa League win at the Stadium of Light, and Sunderland could not find a reply.

By Harvey Watkins,

Dinamo Zagreb won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on Thursday night. Luka Stojkovic and Dion Beljo scored inside the first 39 minutes of this Europa League Matchday 4 fixture, and Sunderland did not score at all.

Seventeen minutes that decided it

Stojkovic opened the scoring after 22 minutes. Beljo doubled the lead in the 39th minute, so Dinamo Zagreb went in at half-time two goals to the good. Nobody scored after that. The outcome of the evening was therefore shaped in a spell of a little over a quarter of an hour before the interval, and the rest of the match did not change it.

That is the plainest reading of the scoreline. The match was not decided by a late twist or a single moment. Dinamo Zagreb struck twice, at separate points, and then kept what they had.

A second half without a goal

From the 39th minute onwards Sunderland needed two goals to draw level and three to win. They had the remainder of the first half and the whole of the second to find them and found none. At home, in a European fixture, that is a significant gap to leave unbridged.

It cuts the other way too. Dinamo Zagreb did not add a third, so the margin stayed at two. The scoreline points to a match that was settled early rather than one that ran away from the home side. A goal at any stage after the break would have made the closing period look very different, and it never came.

Two scorers and a clean sheet for Dinamo Zagreb

For Dinamo Zagreb the result carries several things worth having. They won away from home, they kept a clean sheet, and the goals were shared between two players rather than resting on one. Stojkovic and Beljo both left Sunderland with their names on the scoresheet.

The clean sheet deserves as much weight as the goals. A two-goal lead can be eroded, and Dinamo Zagreb did not allow that to happen at any point in the evening.

Sunderland's evening

For Sunderland there is little on the scoresheet to offer consolation. A home defeat by two clear goals, without one of their own, is about as stark as a European result gets. The damage was done in the first half, and nothing they managed after the 39th minute registered where it counts.

One result, read with care

It is worth being measured about what a single match shows. A 2-0 scoreline records who scored and when, and on that measure this was a clear and deserved-looking win for the visitors. It does not, on its own, settle any wider judgement about either side's Europa League campaign. Sunderland have the chance to respond in their next fixture, and Dinamo Zagreb will want to show this was more than one good first half. For now the record is simple: two goals in 17 minutes, a goalless second half, and a win for Dinamo Zagreb in Sunderland.
