Tolisso cancels out Óskarsson as Real Sociedad and Lyon draw

Real Sociedad led through Orri Óskarsson before Corentin Tolisso levelled for Lyon in a 1-1 draw at the Reale Arena on Europa League Matchday 4.

Real Sociedad and Lyon finished level at the Reale Arena on Thursday evening, drawing 1-1 on Matchday 4 of the Europa League. Orri Óskarsson put the home side ahead in the 28th minute, Corentin Tolisso equalised for Lyon in the 54th, and neither side found a second goal.

Óskarsson gives Real Sociedad the lead

The opening goal arrived shortly before the half-hour, and it went to the hosts. Óskarsson's goal put Real Sociedad in front at home, and they kept that advantage through the remainder of the first half. A one-goal lead at the interval in a European tie is a reasonable position to be in, though it is rarely a comfortable one, because a single moment can undo it.

Tolisso levels early in the second half

That moment came nine minutes after the restart. Tolisso's goal in the 54th minute brought Lyon level and ended a lead that had lasted 26 minutes on the clock either side of the break. For the visitors, it meant the deficit they carried into half-time had been cleared well before the final stages, leaving them plenty of time to push on.

Neither side took that time. The match ran for more than half an hour after the equaliser without another goal, and the score stayed at 1-1 to the end.

Two ways to read the result

A 1-1 draw with this shape can be told from either end. For Real Sociedad, it is a home lead that did not hold. For Lyon, it is a goal conceded away from home that they recovered from. Both readings are fair, and the scoreline on its own does not settle which is closer to the truth.

What the timing does show is that the second half was open long enough for either team to win it. An equaliser in the 54th minute is not a late reprieve. It reset the match with a good deal of football still to play, and the fact that nothing followed suggests that neither side could find the decisive goal, though that is a view rather than a conclusion. It would be overreaching to say from the score alone that one side deserved more than the other.

The scorers

  • Orri Óskarsson (Real Sociedad), 28 minutes
  • Corentin Tolisso (Lyon), 54 minutes

Óskarsson's goal gave Real Sociedad the lead, and Tolisso's ensured Lyon left with a share of it. Each scored the only goal his side managed, and between them they account for the whole story of the scoring.

A shared result

The draw leaves both clubs with something from Matchday 4 and neither with a win. Real Sociedad will reflect on a lead that slipped away at home, while Lyon have come from behind on the road. Beyond that, a single 1-1 draw tells you only so much about either side, and it would be unwise to read too much into it in isolation.
