"Martin O'Neill's fundamental priority is Martin O'Neill, and he's there because of his contract." If Callum McGregor should have left in the summer, should Martin O'Neill? Gordon Parks says O'Neill "is used as the deflection" and "was delighted to get off of the contract"; Peter Martin says taking the job on that contract means "your reputation is going to get tarnished".
Transcript:
Yeah, if I was, genuinely, if I was Callum McGregor, I'd have left in the summer because this is something that everybody could see. Martin O'Neill's a different kettle of fish. You know, he's, he's also like Callum McGregor. He should have gone in the summer and said thank you, because I can see the nightmare that's about to unfold, because...
He wishes he did.
No, he didn't. This is again...
Right now he wishes.
Tell the truth. Martin O'Neill's there... Martin O'Neill's fundamental priority is Martin O'Neill, and he's there because of his contract. And to say that it's anything other than that is to create this kind of... Listen, Martin leaves tomorrow, right? The epitaph, the tributes, the waxing lyrical about the legendary status. He has that in the bank, but more importantly to Martin, it's what he's getting into his bank. And that's why he's there, and it's why he is used as the deflection. We may as well be honest about it. Martin was delighted to get off of the contract.
Yeah, absolutely. Listen, and never mind Martin O'Neill, as any manager would of a top club. But the problem is, you know, the circumstances of when you sign the contract, that you're just going to be taking the money, because basically your reputation is going to get tarnished.
