"It's not. It's a Scotland problem." Hugh MacDonald on sectarian chants in Scottish football: not just a Celtic and Rangers problem, something "you'll hear sectarian stuff at grounds throughout Scotland", why Celtic players name Tynecastle, and why the only way to deal with it is to police it, which would mean arresting people "in their tens and their twenties". From The Journos, Wednesday 21 October 2026.

Transcript:

There's a feeling that this is a Celtic Rangers problem. It's not. It's a Scotland problem. You'll hear sectarian stuff at grounds throughout Scotland. Hearts, notoriously, and you've got to say it, have been at the vanguard of this for years.

If you talk to Celtic players in particular, they'll say to you, if they're talking about the worst grounds to go to, they'll say Tynecastle, because they're right on top of you and you can actually hear everything.

So it's been a long-standing problem in Scottish society, I would say, and it's illustrated on football grounds. And the only way to deal with it is to police it. And the only way to deal with it is to start arresting people for it. And there becomes a problem, you know, because you're going to have to get policemen to wade into crowds and arrest, in their tens and their twenties, people, because it's been going on that long.

Can sectarian chanting be policed out of Scottish football? Tell us below.
