Tom Boyd explains how Celtic defeated Rangers to win the Tennent’s Sixes Championship 2026. "Apparently I've still resigned." Tom Boyd's Celtic legends were hammered 7-1 by Rangers on Saturday night, then came back from two goals down twice to beat them 5-4 in the Tennent's Sixes final at the Braehead Arena on Sunday.
Boyd tells PLZ Soccer about the few choice words after the 7-1, the character it took to turn it around, Aiden McGeady's ability and Jonny Hayes's engine ("only second to Tom Boyd's"), and why the Braehead surface and organisation impressed the players. Gary Hooper's hat-trick won the final after Celtic beat St Johnstone in the semi.

Tom Boyd, the manager of the Tennent's Sixes champions. How does that feel? Because I was getting so many texts from people saying, you know, it's time you resigned, and suddenly you've turned it around.
Well, apparently I've still resigned, according to Mr George McCluskey. George, that one's on you. Because, yeah, last night we weren't celebrating. We didn't have smiles on our faces. The mistakes that we made were punished, and we made a lot of them, and obviously that's why it was a 7-1 defeat. There's not much you need to say to the players. They know. And that level of commitment and determination to come back twice from two goals down, added to the ability that some of the boys have got... yeah, really delighted that we had a bit of glory there.
Yeah, a lot of the boys are paying credit to you for, obviously, the hurt of last night, and you just having a few choice words with them.
I can't say what I said here, and I won't say what I said here, but they were left in no uncertain terms that last night's performance wasn't good enough. And I think they came back. The display today, we were getting better than yesterday, and we stopped concent...
So we went on and learned from that and came back. Fantastic character from the boys to come back twice.
Yeah. What about the quality of the team? Because you had some really good players in there.
Listen, there are some players out there that should still be playing. Aiden's ability, and Jonny Hayes's engine is only second to Tom Boyd's, you know. Honestly, that was absolutely magnificent effort from them all, to do that and to come back, and the composure from the boys scoring the goals as well. That's ability. And from what you've seen of them last night, the difference that you've seen from last night is the determination. They've got ability. It's just about proving it on the park, and they showed it tonight.
Tom, you're better placed than anybody to look at the structure, the setup, the Braehead Arena, the Tennent's Sixes, the way it was organised. How impressed have you been with it?
Really good. I think the boys were talking about how the surface was excellent. We've seen some where the carpet's been coming up and stuff like that. So yeah, without any shadow of a doubt, very, very well organised, and whoever's been responsible for that has done a fantastic job. And I'm sure the atmosphere was great down here. A few of the games got a little bit meaty, and that one there as well, very much so. I think there were a couple of expletives on show. But that's football. That's what we like to see. We like to see commitment and passion in this country, and I think you've seen that from both teams in abundance today.
