Charlie Mulgrew explains how a 7-1 thumping by Rangers turned Celtic into Tennent’s Sixes champions. "I'll probably regret some of the celebrations." Charlie Mulgrew tells PLZ Soccer how Celtic's legends turned a 7-1 hammering by Rangers on Saturday night into a 5-4 win over them in the Tennent's Sixes final at the Braehead Arena on Sunday.
The key to the victory? "A wee night out", a couple of home truths and a yawn before the semi-final. Mulgrew on getting payback for the 7-1, Charlie Adam's celebration getting under his skin, why Celtic will take "no inspiration from us unfit players", and his hope that Martin O'Neill's side can go on a run. Tom Boyd's Celtic beat Falkirk and St Johnstone on the way to the final, where Gary Hooper's hat-trick won it.

Charlie Mulgrew, Celtic are the Tennent's Sixes champions. Could you have believed that after yesterday?
Oh, well, that hurt last night, Peter. I mean, we left here, and I know it's not your job, obviously, you're retired, but your head still wants to win games. You still want to compete. I mean, we didn't compete anywhere near well enough. We knew we gave Rangers about four or five goals easy, so we didn't want to do that tonight. We wanted to get some payback. If we got to the final, we got to the final... So happy. That's good.
What was the key to the victory?
I think it was a wee night out last night. I think sometimes a wee bit of team bonding, a couple of beers. There was a bit of yawning before; actually, the girl in the tunnel started laughing at me. I yawned before the semi-final. I was needing it. Once I woke up, it was good. A wee bit of team bonding. We said a couple of home truths last night. If the game had been this morning, I'd have pulled out, but we managed. We were a bit stiff near the end, getting on to the final there, stopping and starting, but no, no, that was the key to the victory, a wee night out. And probably that defeat last night helped us, because it hurt, and it kept our feet on the ground and made us realise that Rangers are a good team. They've got a lot of young players that have just retired, so it was always going to be difficult. We had to cut out the mistakes. We knew we could score goals, but it was going to be hard to keep them out. But we managed to get the victory.
And let's not forget, a fair bit of quality in that team.
There was quality in both teams, and a good bit of dig as well. I don't remember the last time I felt like that. I'll probably regret some of the celebrations at the end. I remember looking at Durrant and cheering. I'll probably regret that. But listen, that is what it is. It's emotion. I think Charlie Adam scored and celebrated as well, and right, that gets under your skin. And then Waghorn megs me twice, and I'm like, head's gone. I know you've megged me before, haven't you?
So, listen, it's emotion, but thankfully we won.
Are you hoping, in a strange sort of way, that the Tennent's Sixes is an inspiration to Martin and his side?
Of course. Well, it's never going to happen. There's no inspiration from us running about there. Listen, I hope Celtic can recover. If anybody can, Martin has proved he can win games, and Celtic just need to improve their performances and hopefully go on a wee run and win. You wouldn't be surprised if Celtic and Rangers both won their next five and it was tight. So that'll be the focus for Celtic. They'll take no inspiration from us unfit players rolling about that pitch.
