'This board lacks the ambition to take Celtic to another level.' - Peter Martin makes his case against the Celtic board after Celtic 0-1 Rangers: a slide he traces back to selling Kyogo in January 2025, a well-run club that puts profits first, and fans backed financially but never with ambition. Until Dermot Desmond sells up, he argues, nothing changes, because this board is a shambles and the whole structure needs to go.

Um, and I think you only have to look at something I've been consistent with uh throughout this year and previous years as well when I've highlighted what the problem is. And the problem is quite simply that this board lacks the ambition to try and take Celtic to another level. And they've had that lack of ambition um for a considerable amount of time, not just the last year to 18 months. I stretch back to the selling of Kyogo in the January of 2025 and then from there on it's just been a a downward slope.
It's a slide down the way while the profits go up. I've said it consistently. They are a well-run club with accountants and of course figures in mind and every one of them has been rewarded for putting the profits first. The Celtic fans have backed them financially, but they haven't been backed with the ambition, whether it be uh European football, where they just want to be able to compete.
Nobody's asking them to spend 20 million on a player. Not one Celtic fan I know has asked them that. I think they've looked and said, "Look, let's be ambitious. Let's have a long-term strategy." But there isn't one.
It's just constantly sell the players, and then it's it's degrading the players that they're buying in. There doesn't seem to be any great foresight into it, a long-term strategy. And I think until Dermot Desmond finally decides that enough is enough, and he sells the club up and gives someone else a chance to come in as a majority shareholder or as someone who takes over completely, this board is a shambles. The chief executive says nothing and two additions won't make one blind bit of difference to the way they want to run the club.
