Neil Lennon — the manager Dunfermline lost the Scottish Cup Final — publicly backs Martin O'Neill to make his own call on his Celtic future. Hours after Dunfermline went down 3-1 to Celtic at Hampden, Neil Lennon was asked whether his old boss has earned the right to decide if he stays on as Celtic manager. The answer is the most gracious cross-cluster moment of the day:
"I think it's his decision. I think it should be his decision whether he wants to stay on or not. And only he can answer that. So I think the club should let him say what he wants to do.
I think he's put himself in the best position. I don't see many other candidates out there that could do what he's done this season. And it doesn't surprise me.
So if he stays on, great. If he doesn't, then again the club should do something for him in terms of the recognition that he's brought to the club in two spells."
The most pointed line: "I don't see many other candidates out there that could do what he's done this season." That's Lennon — the man whose Dunfermline side just lost to O'Neill's Celtic — publicly saying nobody else is a better fit. Set against O'Neill's own "somebody younger" comment hours earlier, the manager succession story now has its full cast: O'Neill says he should step aside, Lennon says he shouldn't have to.
What's your read? Should the club let O'Neill choose, push for one more year, or move on as O'Neill suggested? Drop your verdict below.
