🔥 Simon Murray on His Goal Celebration, Dundee Derby Win & Being Hit by a Vape | Exclusive Interview
Dundee striker Simon Murray reflects on a historic victory in the Dundee Derby, his passionate celebration, and the shocking incident where he was struck by a vape thrown from the crowd.
🏆 Dundee’s First Away Win at Tannadice in 20 Years
Dundee’s 4-2 victory over Dundee United wasn’t just about bragging rights—it was a huge result in their battle to avoid relegation. Murray, who played a key role in the win, shared his emotions on breaking the 19-year away league winless streak against their city rivals.
💬 On the Team’s Performance:
🗣️ “This is what you want to experience when you sign for this club. The motivation was to get away from trouble, but also to give our fans something to really celebrate.”
💬 On Using the Win as a Springboard for Survival:
🗣️ “When you’re down there, you sometimes feel things aren’t going for you, but you have to stick together. We fought for every point today, and I think we showed that to our fans.”
⚡ The Goal Celebration That Had Everyone Talking
Murray’s intense celebration after scoring a late penalty was a moment of pure emotion—but it also sparked some controversy. Running the full length of the pitch, he mirrored Emmanuel Adebayor’s infamous celebration by celebrating in front of the Dundee United fans.
🗣️ “I just thought it was the right thing to do. If you can give it out, you’ve got to take it too. I could take it when they beat us late on at Dens—it’s the worst feeling in the world. Today was the reverse, so it was just a bit of payback.”
🎯 Did He Plan It?
Murray revealed he had actually visualized the moment all week, telling teammates in training he would recreate Adebayor’s celebration if he scored.
🗣️ “I said to the boys, ‘I’m going to do the Adebayor when I score.’ So when I got the penalty and the ref told me it was the last kick of the game, there was only one thing in my mind—I wasn’t missing that penalty!”
🚨 Being Hit by a Vape – Murray’s Reaction
Unfortunately, his celebration was overshadowed by an ugly moment when a vape was thrown from the stands, hitting him near the head.
💬 On the Incident:
🗣️ “I don’t even remember it to be fair, but obviously it’s not great. That kind of thing shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone.”
💬 On Whether It Could Have Been Dangerous:
🗣️ “Yeah, something like that can be really dangerous. Imagine if it hit me in the eye—it’s unacceptable. But I know there are Dundee United fans who won’t accept that from their support either.”
Despite the incident, Murray remained focused on the team’s achievement, making it clear he didn’t want the negative event to overshadow their incredible win.
⚽ What’s Next for Dundee?
With Dundee fighting to stay in the Premiership, this win could be the momentum boost they need to push on and secure survival. The team showed pace, determination, and fight, qualities Murray believes can help them stay up.
💬 On the Future:
🗣️ “We’ve got to keep the consistency. We’ve got the players to win games, and we need to keep proving that.”
