🔒 Defensive Solidity & Clean Sheet
Goodwin praised his team’s organisation, shape, and defensive resilience. Dundee United denied Aberdeen clear chances, with only Armstrong’s strike against the crossbar causing concern. He was especially pleased with the clean sheet, given recent defensive mistakes.
⚡ Counterattacking Threat
United looked dangerous on the break, with Belchek, Fata, and Sapsford stretching Aberdeen’s defence. Seel and Kamara provided balance, knowing when to keep possession and when to play forward. Goodwin said this was the closest they’ve come to achieving the balance between defensive solidity and attacking threat.
✅ Most Complete Performance
With 14 new signings, Goodwin admitted it takes time to gel. But he described this as the most comfortable and complete performance so far. The team remained calm even under late pressure, showing resilience against a strong Aberdeen push.
📈 Positive Start to the Season
Ten points from five games is a return the manager would have accepted at the start. He highlighted strong performances against Hearts, Hibs, and Aberdeen — teams United expect to compete with for top-six places — and said United have more than matched them.
🎯 Striker’s Sharpness
Goodwin praised his striker’s instinct for being in the right place at the right time, scoring five goals already. While he wants more involvement in general play, he admitted it’s hard to criticise given the impact.
🧤 Kucherenko’s Redemption
Goodwin was delighted for goalkeeper Kucherenko, who bounced back after criticism for errors against Hibs. He praised his character, excellent distribution, and ability to do the basics while also helping build attacks.
🤝 Key Partnerships
He highlighted the partnership between Lachie and Kamara, calling it vital to the team. He was relieved the red card was overturned, describing him as an “influential player” who drives the team forward and defends with commitment.
🏗️ Team Evolution
Goodwin noted the transformation since March, crediting both last season’s squad for setting the culture and the new signings for settling quickly. He praised the backroom staff for supporting players off the pitch and emphasised that while poor performances will come, desire and organisation won’t be lacking.
⚠️ Sympathy for Thelin
Goodwin expressed sympathy for Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin, recalling that David Gray was in a similar position with Hibs last year before turning things around. He acknowledged Aberdeen’s heavy investment and quality squad, but stressed his main focus is Dundee United, not their rivals.
