Sebastian Pocognoli trying to put a positive spin on a dismal night for Scotland losing Slovenia. Scotland 1, Slovenia 2, and I've just come out of the press conference after listening to Sebastien Pocognoli, the Scotland manager, trying to put a positive spin on things.
As far as the Nations League group is concerned. But Scotland now will struggle to finish second in this group. It really favours Slovenia now, with only North Macedonia here at Hampden and Switzerland away to come for the Scots. But over the 90 minutes, just not good enough. A shambles at the back.
It all started so well for Scotland, with a little back flick from Ryan Christie into the back of the net from close range to give us the perfect start. Although there were alarm bells, because Scotland were exposed at the back on a couple of occasions, and but for a fabulous intervention from Andy Robertson, it could have been all so different, and all square at the break. In the second half, Scotland just, from the left and the right-hand side of the flanks, Robertson pushing forward and Ben Gannon-Doak, left huge gaps for the Slovenians to expose our weaknesses at the back, and they took full advantage of it. Matko getting the equaliser before Danijel Šturm scored the winner for Slovenia.
Scotland huffed and puffed and really couldn't break down Slovenia, and our chances were few and far between. Worrying times here for Scotland. I thought they were poor at the back, lacked creativity, and then throwing on maybe Josh McPake and hoping maybe Findlay Curtis could open up the Slovenians was a forlorn hope in the end. Not an impressive night, a flat crowd and big problems for Sebastien Pocognoli to try and even get us to the European Championships through the Nations League process. Disappointing night, a lot of questions to be asked, and after listening to him, I'm not feeling very confident of the way ahead so far. Even with all the young players that we have there, we still have the problems: we can't score goals and we can't defend. Here at Hampden Park, Scotland 1, Slovenia 2.
‘We still can’t defend.’ Peter Martin writes off Scotland’s chances of finishing second in their nations league group after a dismal loss to Slovenia.
