"Who would the fans trust?" Celtic need a mediator, not "a Dermot puppet"

"Who would the fans trust?" Peter Martin says Celtic need someone new to come in and build bridges between the board and the supporters, because "the Celtic fans have stopped listening to them".

It opens with Alex Rae and Alan Rough on what abuse at the ground does to a manager and his family. Peter says abusing board members such as Michael Nicholson is "bang out of order", Alex asks who could do the job without being seen as "a Dermot puppet", and Peter says both sides need give and take: "you do not get anywhere by digging your heels in".

Transcript:

Again, you just touched on it briefly there. If you go to the game and your wife's there with your two kids...

Oh, it's brutal, man. It's mental. You have to be a special individual.

You started that at Thistle with me.

I've been there. Get me out.

Exactly. As you're sitting there and it's directed at you, there's nowhere to look.

And that's why I think at the ground, and I've said this before and I said it the other day there, I don't think... I think it needs somebody to come in as almost some kind of mediator, somebody else, a new appointment to come in and start to try and build the bridges. I don't think the current board have got the capability. I think the Celtic fans have stopped listening to them. That said, I don't think it is in any way productive to start abusing board members, whether it be Michael Nicholson or anybody else on that board. I don't think abusing them, certainly not their family life or anything, is called for. I think it's bang out of order. But I do think there needs to be some kind of mediation, somebody that can come in and say...

Who would it be, Peter? Would it have to be a former player?

No, I don't think it's a former player. I don't think there's anyone...

Who would the fans trust? Because if someone comes in tomorrow and says, Alan Rough's coming in as a mediator, automatically I think the fans would be going, it's a Dermot puppet. Do you know what I mean? So you have to get someone who's trustworthy in the eyes of the fans.

I don't know who that person is, or even if there's an appointment capable of it. It's certainly not the last two directors, because they're well known anyway. They're well within that Celtic camp. They've been around that whole body for a long period of time, so I don't think that's signifying any great change. But nevertheless, I think there needs to be either a change or, not so much appeasement, but some sort of give and take in the negotiations. You do not get anywhere by digging your heels in. Everybody has to give something back and say, right, okay, we've made mistakes, we need a bit of humility, we've made mistakes, this is how we're going to move forward. We're going to try and do this, this and this, but you need to do this, this and this.

To pull it together.

To pull it together. Both parties need to have a bit of give and take in this situation, and an acknowledgement that mistakes have been made. And obviously I'm not talking about 18 months of mistakes. I'm talking about a sustained period where they have a strategy which the Celtic fans want them to change.
