Ex Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has announced his retirement from professional football after 20 years.
The 39-year-old picked up four League titles, three Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008 and the Europa League Cup final in the 2021/2022 season.
Throughout his time at the Light blues Davis won PFA Scotland Player of the Year in 2010 and The Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year in 2021.
Th ex-Aston Villa man represented Northern Ireland on 140 occasions, being awarded the Irish Football Associations Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016.
In December 2022, Davis suffered an ACL injury which has kept him on the sidelines for over a year.
He stated in an interview with Rangers TV that he had some testing recently and released he was still far away from returning to the pitch, resulting in his calling his time on his glittering career.
St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson played with the Rangers veteran for their National team and coached him when Robinson was Michael O’Neills assistant in 2016.
The Buddies boss gave his thoughts on his former players retirement at his press conference today.
He said: “He’s if not the best then he’s right up there. He should be mentioned in the same bracket as George Best.
“He’s such a talented talented boy with what he’s done for Northern Irish football throughout his time. He’s provided so much for the young players coming through.
“He’s an inspiration and he’s someone that I’ve worked with, he’s arguably the best player I’ve worked with on the training pitch.
“He never caused a minutes problem, easy maintenance , easy to manage and a super super talented boy”.
