Florian Wirtz hit a brace on his Champions League debut to help Bayer Leverkusen launch their campaign with a 4-0 win over Feyenoord at De Kuip.

Wirtz opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Alex Grimaldo doubled the lead with half an hour gone.

The Bundesliga champions continued to dictate matters and Wirtz hit his second of the evening after 36 minutes and Bayer wrapped up the points before half time when Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther turned the ball into his own net a minute before the break.

Germany international Wirtz opened the scoring when he drove home from 20 yards before Grimaldo doubled the lead with 30 minutes on the clock.

The wing-back stormed into the box to get on the end of Jeremie Frimpong’s cross to score.

Frimpong’s creative flair was on full show again as Leverkusen made it three.

The Dutch right-back marauded forward and delivered a peach of a cross for Wirtz to volley home.

And the match was over as a contest a minute before the break when Feyenoord goalkeeper Wellenreuther turned Edmond Tapsoba’s header into his own net to wrap it all up for Xabi Alonso’s men.
