Former Netherlands midfielder Johan Neeskens has died, age 73.
Neeskens, who scored 17 goals in 49 international appearances for the Netherlands, enjoyed a 23-year playing career with prominent roles with Ajax and Barcelona. He later had spells in prominent managerial and coaching roles.
Widely recognised as one of the iconic footballers of the twentieth century, Neeskens was part of the fabled ‘total football’ Ajax side that won three European Cups. He was also part of the Netherlands team that reached successive World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978.
“With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend,” said a statement released by the KNVB.
“His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team.
“With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights and iconic penalties, [he] will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country.”
After retiring as a player in 1991, Neeskens coached several clubs and was also an assistant coach with the Dutch national team from 1995 to 2000.
