Jonathan David’s brace earns Lille a famous victory at Atletico Madrid

Jonathan David scored twice as Lille produced a stunning comeback to claim a 3-1 victory at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez grabbed his first Champions League goal for his new side to put them ahead in the eighth minute.

Atletico were punished for failing to make the most of their first-half chances, with Edon Zhegrova levelling for Lille in the 61st minute before fellow substitute David put them in front from the penalty spot.

The Canadian – who scored the winning penalty in the French side’s Champions League victory against Real Madrid earlier this month – then sealed victory with a third late on.

Atletico almost took the lead inside the first two minutes when Alexander Sorloth found himself through on goal but came up short when he fired wide of Lucas Chevalier’s net.

The opener came from a mistake at the back from Ousmane Toure, who allowed Alvarez to intercept an under-hit pass back to Chevalier before firing into the far corner.

Bruno Genesio was forced into a 16th-minute change after midfielder Remy Cabella went down and could not continue, with Zhegrova coming on.

Sorloth tried again from a fine delivery from Antoine Griezmann, this time seeing his effort saved, and he then shot over from close range following another well-placed delivery from the Frenchman.

Zhegrova’s equaliser came at the end of a well-worked move, finding the top-left corner from the edge of the penalty area past a helpless Jan Oblak.

It took a lengthy VAR review for officials to confirm the penalty award for Lille’s second, with Jorge Koke fouling Benjamin Andre after the ball had been cleared into the crowd. The punishment stood despite bewildered protests from the hosts.

David stepped up and coolly converted before finding the back of the net through a crowded area with a deflected effort in the 89th minute to secure victory.
