Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool.
The 22-year-old France international was withdrawn in the 56th minute at Anfield and tests have confirmed a muscular problem that, according to reports in Spain, is set to rule him out for three weeks.
It comes as a blow to both the club and to the player, who only returned from a knee ligament injury in September and has impressed despite Real trailing Barcelona by four points in LaLiga.
A club statement said: “After the tests carried out today on Eduardo Camavinga by the club’s medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the biceps femoris of his left leg. His progress will be monitored.”
Defeat to Arne Slot’s team was a third loss in five games in this season’s Champions League and leaves the holders in danger of failing to finish in the top eight, necessary for direct passage to the last 16.
Should they fail to pick up positive results in their final three games against Atalanta, RB Salzburg and Brest, Real face the possibility of finishing lower than 24th place and failing even to reach the play-off round.
Camavinga is set to miss the Atalanta match as well as domestic fixtures against Getafe, Athletic Bilbao, Girona and Rayo Vallecano.
He is the latest in a series of injuries that have disrupted Carlo Ancelotti’s plans with Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao long-term absentees, whilst Vinicius Junior, David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni were also missing against Liverpool.
