Tammy Abraham struck a late winner as AC Milan continued their Champions League revival with a 2-1 victory over Red Star Belgrade.
Abraham, an early replacement for the injured Alvaro Morata, prodded home during a goalmouth scrum in the 87th minute after the Serbian champions had fought back at the San Siro.
It was Milan’s fourth successive win in the competition to keep them in contention for automatic qualification for the knockout phase.
Christian Pulisic’s calf injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the month saw Ruben Loftus-Cheek start in his place, but the home side’s initial breakthrough came from another source.
Rafael Leao’s opener shortly before half-time was a magnificent strike that was made possible by a pinpoint Youssouf Fofana long pass.
Leao collected the ball in the corner of the area with a superb first touch before drilling the ball home.
Right-back Ognjen Mimovic threatened early in the second half but his shot at the near post was the wrong option and Milan were let off the hook.
Abraham’s dithering after being gifted a glorious chance by Davide Calabria cost the home side the chance to extend their lead – and they were made to pay in the 67th minute.
Nemanja Radonjic snatched the ball from Yunus Musah, advanced to the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot that gave keeper Mike Maignan no chance.
Mirko Ivanic threatened to give Red Star the lead but he dragged his shot wide and the decisive moment came as the final whistle approached when Abraham showed his finishing instincts from close range.
