Feyenoord recorded a famous 3-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich as the German giants were left heading towards the play-off round.
Santiago Gimenez struck twice in the first half and Ayase Ueda added a third at the death in Rotterdam to stun the Bundesliga giants and climb above them in the league phase with one game to go.
Their goalkeeper Justin Bijlow was just as big a hero as Gimenez as he produced a string of superb saves to keep Bayern at bay, while Leroy Sane also hit the post.
But Vincent Kompany’s side succumbed to a third defeat in seven matches, meaning they will have to win their final game against Slovan Bratislava next week and hope a number of other results go their way if they are to finish in the top eight and earn automatic qualification to the last 16.
It was a huge night for Feyenoord and their fans brought the atmosphere, so much so that the game was delayed for eight minutes while smoke, which engulfed the ground after fireworks were let off, cleared.
And the hosts started with a bang of their own as they opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a lightning-quick counter attack.
Gijs Smal’s long ball landed perfectly for Gimenez, who took it in his stride and thrashed his shot past Manuel Neuer moments after he blocked Alphonso Davies’ shot at the other end.
Bayern’s response was strong and they created several chances to get back level, with Leon Goretzka heading over.
Bijlow did well to deny Kingsley Coman with a low save and there was an even better stop soon after as Coman was again denied after darting into the area.
Bijlow was becoming a one-man barrier as he produced an instinctive save to deny Harry Kane from close range and then the keeper superbly tipped over when a headed clearance from a corner went awry.
But, from the resulting corner, Feyenoord were able to break and double their advantage.
They again countered at speed and, after initially wasting a four-on-two attack, Bayern’s Raphael Guerreiro, who had come off the bench moments earlier, clumsily fouled Calvin Stengs.
It was in the ninth minute of time added on that Gimenez clinically converted the penalty to make it 2-0.
Bijlow’s heroics continued after the break as he denied Kane again at the near post before producing another flying save to keep out Jamal Musiala’s header.
Kane then dragged a shot just wide before the England captain laid one on a plate for Sane, who headed against the post from six yards out.
It was not Bayern’s night and Ueda put the icing on the cake at the death with another breakaway goal.
