Giuliano Simeone and Antoine Griezmann starred as Atletico Madrid sealed their place in the top eight of the Champions League with a 4-1 win at RB Salzburg.

The 22-year-old, son of Atletico boss Diego Simeone, opened the scoring before turning provider for Griezmann with the Spanish side netting twice in the opening 12 minutes at the Red Bull Arena.

Griezmann and Marcos Llorente added gloss to the scoreline either side of the break to give Atletico a fifth consecutive European win that secured a last-16 place.

Salzburg eventually got on the scoresheet at the death through a stunning volley from Adam Daghim.

Simeone fired into the bottom corner in the fourth minute and then latched onto a long ball over the top ahead of goalkeeper Alexander Schlager before crossing for the unmarked Griezmann to hammer home from close range.

Schlager denied Griezmann a second with his feet but the keeper could do nothing to stop the former France striker’s low left-footed finish on the stroke of half-time.

Llorente drilled an effort through Schlager’s hands in the 63rd minute, with Petar Ratkov heading over from a corner as Salzburg looked for a goal.

Schlager produced a fine diving save to keep out substitute Rodrigo Riquelme’s low effort late on.

Schlager then produced a long kick up field towards Daghim, who volleyed over Jan Oblak and into the net in style.
