Bayer Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand insists he see a “great team” beginning to form despite their traumatic start to the season.

Leverkusen axed boss Erik Ten Hag after just three games having lost a host of star players including Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.

Yet Hjulmand told a press conference: “Every player can be who they want to be here – and we do our best to help all players develop in the best possible way.

“I see a great team and if we fully realise the potential, it can be great.”

They currently lie sixth in the Bundesliga ahead of a Champions League meeting with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Defender Edmond Tapsoba added: “The team is still getting to know each other. That takes time and it’s getting better and better. That also makes us better on the pitch.

“We’re well on the way to rebuilding that strong spirit from before. We’re giving it our all and I’m doing my best to give my team-mates a good feeling and help the team.”

Dutch champions PSV are set to be without Ricardo Pepi despite the news the striker has only suffered a slight leg strain.

Pepi was taken off early during PSV’s 2-1 away win at Excelsior Rotterdam on Saturday.

The club said: “Pepi will use the next few days to work on his recovery individually and gradually rejoin group training.”
