Lewis Mayo has his sights set on a place in Scotland’s Euro 2024 squad. The 23-year-old centre half has been a crucial player in Kilmarnock’s impressive season and has spoken about a potential first call up to Steve Clarke’s squad for the up-coming tournament.
Ahead of their trip to Fir Park, Mayo spoke about the aspirations of not just Kilmarnock this season but also his personal goals looking ahead to the European championships,
“I’d love to go and make that leap and get myself in the squad, but I do that by doing my best at club level and seeing what happens”.
Mayo was also asked about his manager, Derek McInnes’ comments that he’d play for Scotland one day. “It’s very encouraging, again for me, I’ll take a lot of confidence from that. He’s obviously put a lot of faith in me, after signing me on a permanent basis after my loan spell. “
The young Scotsman has been an ever-present cog in Derek McInnes system this season, playing every minute in the Scottish premiership. Mayo’s impressive performances have had huge impact on Kilmarnock’s season, with them currently sitting 4th in the league table, 11 points above this week’s opponents Motherwell.
Despite the noise surrounding Mayo’s potential Scotland call up, he himself has made it clear that he is fully focused on the remainder of the campaign and Killie’s ambition of qualifying for European football next season.
In response to being asked about Kilmarnock’s chances of finishing in a European spot, Mayo replied, “Given where we are now, yes. It’s a good reference point. I keep coming back to it, but it wasn’t that long ago that Kilmarnock were playing European football”.
