Celtic thrashed Dundee 7-1 at Celtic Park last night! Their 6-0 lead at half-time was a Scottish Premiership record, so that got us thinking, what is highest-scoring game in Scottish Premiership history?
Please remember, the league rebranded to the Premiership in July 2013, so Motherwell and Hibs’ famous draw 6-6 at Fir Park cannot make our list.
Celtic and Dundee’s tally of eight goals equals that of a previous four matches: Dundee United 6-2 Dundee (January 2015), Rangers 7-1 Motherwell (November, 2018), Hamilton Academical 3-5 St Johnstone and Rangers 8-0 Hamilton Academical (November, 2020).
However, we have picked a clear top four:
- Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell
In February 2017, Derek McInnes’s Dons battered Motherwell 7-2. Adam Rooney scored a hattrick in a night to forget for the Steelmen where manager Mark McGhee was famously sent to the stands.
- Celtic 8-1 Hamilton
Celtic hammered Hamilton 8-1 at Celtic Park in January 2016 to send Ronny Deila’s side six points clear at the top of the table. Leigh Griffiths scored a hattrick on the night, taking his Celtic tally to 54 goals within just two years at the club.
- Dundee United 0-9 Celtic
Celtic’s 9-0 romp at the expense of Dundee United in August 2022 remains the Scottish Premiership’s largest victory and the Tangerines’ biggest-ever home defeat. Kyogo and Abada both netted hattricks in a match which ultimately led to the dismissal of United manager Jack Ross.
- Hibernian 5-5 Rangers
Hibs and Rangers take top spot for their 5-5 draw at Easter Road on the final day of the 2017/18 season. Rangers came from 3-0 down at half-time to lead 5-3, only for Hibs to stage a comeback of their own which included a last-minute equaliser to complete Jamie MacLaren’s hattrick.
