Myles Lewis-Skelly is determined to continue repaying the faith Arsenal have placed in him after receiving a maiden England call-up which left him “shouting around my house” in delight.

The 18-year-old left-back was included in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad on Friday for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

That was reward for some impressive displays since breaking into the Arsenal team this season, with the versatile teenager making his 26th senior appearance in Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Chelsea.

Victory saw Arsenal end a three-match winless run and close the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool to 12 points heading into the international break, where Lewis-Skelly could continue his rapid rise by winning his first cap.

“I’m buzzing, you know,” he told Arsenal’s website about being called up by England. “Honesty I was elated, just shouting around my house.

“Obviously I’m excited for what’s coming up, but you’ve always got to stay locked in on the present and not get too attached to the feeling that’s coming later down the line.”

Arteta handed the home-grown teenager his Arsenal debut against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in September at the age of 17, and he has gone on to become a key part of the squad during a breakthrough season.

He added following the derby win over Chelsea: “It’s all I can ask for really.

“I’m just so grateful to the team for entrusting me and the boss entrusting me, and I want to continue to repay them and be the best version of myself.”

Chelsea continued to look a shadow of the side that appeared to be potential title challengers in the first half of the season as they barely got going in north London.

Their patchy form means their chances of playing Champions League football remain up in the air with Newcastle, who are currently sixth, able to leapfrog them in the table if the Carabao Cup champions win their game in hand.

“For sure we want to play in the Champions League next season and things are close, but we are focused on ourselves because that’s the most important thing,” Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo told his club’s website.

“We are working hard to try and win every game and get there to play in the Champions League – that’s the target.”
