Barcelona survived a major scare to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League as they came from behind to beat Copenhagen 4-1 and secure a top-eight finish.

Viktor Dadason broke the offside trap to give the Danes a shock lead just four minutes in and they held that lead until Robert Lewandowski finally got Barca back on level terms, three minutes into the second half.

Yamine Lamal then completed the turnaround with the help of a huge deflection before a controversial penalty decision allowed Raphinha to give the Catalans breathing space in the 69th minute, with substitute Marcus Rashford adding a late fourth.

Barca arrived in confident mood but found themselves trailing before some fans had even taken their seats.

Copenhagen snatched possession in midfield and Mohamed Elyounoussi threaded the ball into the path of Dadason, who tucked the ball through the legs of Joan Garcia.

Barcelona responded with a string of chances but found Copenhagen goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski in outstanding form.

When Junnosuke Suzuki’s backpass came up short in the 10th minute, Kotarski got a big hand to Lewandowski’s shot before Pantelis Hatzidiakos tidied up.

Seconds later, Kotarski adjusted superbly to keep out Eric Garcia’s deflected strike before further chances went begging for Dani Olmo and Raphinha.

Barca’s frustration was apparent as Garcia rattled the crossbar with an arrowed effort after 34 minutes and Kotarski then denied Yamal, with the half-time whistle greeted with boos from the home fans.

Hansi Flick brought on Marc Bernal for Garcia at the break and he almost made an instant impact, denied by Kotarski in a breathless start to the half.

Less than three minutes after the restart, Lewandowsi levelled. Yamal broke the offside trap to collect Olmo’s pass and then flicked the ball inside for the 37-year-old to sweep home.

Barca were fired up. Three minutes after the equaliser, Olmo played an almost identical pass to Fermin Lopez but this time he fired into the side-netting.

Copenhagen offered a reminder of their threat on the break just before the hour but Jordan Larsson’s bending shot sailed over after he cut inside from the right.

Instead, it was Barca who struck again and with a huge element of good fortune as Yamal cut inside from the right and hit a shot which took a massive deflection off Elias Achouri to leave Kotarski helpless.

Barca were not done there, but there was yet more good fortunate with their third.

French referee Benoit Bastien pointed to the spot when Lewandowski fell to the floor while shooting in the 66th minute, and although there seemed to be little to no contact between him and Suzuki, the decision survived a VAR check and Raphinha rifled his spot-kick into the bottom corner.

With time running out, Rashford bent in a free-kick from a tight angle on the left, finding the bottom corner as Kotarski stretched in vain.

At the death, there was further reason for Copenhagen to feel aggrieved as Gabriel Pereira was denied what looked a perfectly good goal for a controversial offside decision.
